Alan and Geo at the Outfitter. This is on the inside of one of Superior North's bunkhouses. Our groups have been using the bunkhouses for the last couple trips. They are really just basic shelters, with lights, but they work GREAT, especially if you are dead dog tired.
This is my Ford Windstar and my canoe. This vehicle has made 5 trips up the Gunflint Trail from Louisville, KY. A great way to travel. The canoe rode on top without any problems. Fishing rod cases were carried on the sides, and all gear for 4 guys was stored under the canoe (on the luggage rack)
Alan and Superior North. I have been on many trips with Alan. He is not only a GREAT fisherman, but a perfect member of our crew. Easy to get along with, and willing to help with pretty much any chore. Great person to trip with.
Alan and BassMan somewhere on Saganagons. These two "robofished" pretty much the whole week. Alan managed to catch some walleye. Lucky for us........otherwise we would have been eating smallies and northerns instead of walleyes.
Alan and a nice 3-4lb walleye for Smalley Lake. This walleye was caught from the submerged reef on the right side of the lake.........if coming into the lake from Bitchu Bay. Like I said.........a REALLY nice fish.
BassMan and Alan on the Smalley Portage from Bitchu Bay.
BassMan frying up some fish for dinner. On this trip, we ate fresh fish about 3-4 times. Anytime we caught a decent mess of walleye, we had walleye.
This is another picture of the above structure. I thought it was pretty neat, but I'm not too sure if it is appropriate for the area. Still, I'd probably use the site, if it was OK..........and not a private area.
Interesting campsite on Bitchu Bay. This campsite is out of the park. It looks like this structure is used for a base camp by the outfitters on Bemer Lake. I'm not too sure, but I'd think they would use a tarp or something over the A-Frame structure.
Boundary Point campsite. I really like this campsite. You can get to pretty much any spot on Upper Saganagons from this campsite. This made day tripping the lake pretty easy.
My canoe at our Boundary Point campsite. This is the first year I actually pulled our canoe up EVERY night. Maybe I did this because the canoe belonged to me, instead of the outfitter. Pulling the canoe up is a requirement in this area. Bad news otherwise.
Boundary Point campsite. I really like this campsite. You can get to pretty much any spot on Upper Saganagons from this campsite. This made day tripping the lake pretty easy.
Dan at our Boundary Point campsite. Here he with my Old Town Penobscot 17 canoe. It is a great canoe, and I have used it on many trips. It has since been replaced with a Quetico Boundary Waters
Checkout that CheeseCake.............Don't tell me you cannot eat good in the BWCA. We took 3 desserts this year..........Man, they were good. BassMan couldn't get enough.
Alan and BassMan breaking camp at our Boundary Point campsite.
This is really a neat cabin near the Eastern boundary of the park. I really like visiting this area. Lots of artifacts. Pretty cool.
The last night of our trip, Dan and I tried to cross Cache Bay. BAD MISTAKE. We ended up creating a camp on Cache Bay. This is the bottom of the camp. It actually was a pretty good camp.
Dan........checking out the fire on Saganagons. This was at our second site on Saganagons. This site is on the backside of one of the island sites. It is off the normal travel route, so it is pretty secluded. I really liked this site. It may have problems with bugs later in the year.
This was the only morning we got out before sunrise. The day would turn out to be the BEST day of the trip for Dan and Me. We managed to catch 70+ smallies. The other guys ended up getting lost in Rat Bay.....but we managed to find our destination..........the top of Saganagons.
Dan and a decent smallie from Saganagons.
Still..........another 4+lb smallmouth................Fun, Fun, Fun...........that's all I can say about DAT.
More Smallies. This is yet another decent 3+lb smallie.
Another smallie.
Dan at the Falls Chain.
I'm not too sure what fall this is.........but this is on the falls chain.
My Fishing Machine. I really like the stability of my Penobscot 17 canoe. It is a little heavy, but it is by far the best fishing platform that I have used up there. Not as tippy as a Kevlar, and not nearly as noisy as aluminum. GREAT platform for fishing.
Geo and Dan at the Smalley Lake portage. This was basically a small creek, with a single beaver dam. The beaver dam required you to carry the canoe up and over. We managed to manuever around the dam without having to get out of the canoe. Pretty Cool.
Geo and Dan at the falls Chain...........Kawa Falls...........I think.
Geo Kicking back.........having some lunch...........This is the first time that I have actually taken the time to cook for lunch. It really does not take that much time, and the food can be MUCH better. I think I will be doing this in the future. Now that I think about it....NOT.
AT the top of the Falls Chain Portages...........Canyon Falls..........I think.
Geo at Falls Chain. I have made numerous trips to the area in and around the Falls Chain. McEwen and Kawnipi are along this path, and are 5 STAR Lakes to visit.
Dan at the Falls Chain.
Geo checking the maps on Kenny. This was on our daytrip from Saganagons up the Falls Chain. Like I said..........this was a "non-fishing" daytrip. The first for me in the Boundary Waters.
GeoFisher taking a break. Not only does the vittles vault make a GREAT place to store food, and keep the mini-bears at bay, but they also make pretty decent seats. As you can probably tell, this was one of those fish-eating days.
Geo with a really good 4lb smallie from Rat Bay. This was the start of a GREAT day. We ended up catching over 70 fish that day........with 7 over 4lbs.
Look at the belly on this fish.............WOW.............this was another 4lb smallie caught from Saganagons. I tell you, we HAMMERED the smallmouth bass on this trip. As far as size is concerned, we caught more LARGE smallies that on any other trip.
Geo and another 4lb smallie from Saganagons. This fish was taken using a jig near the top of the lake.
What a beautiful site. This sunset was taken from our Boundary Point campsite. I'm still amased at some of these colors. This is by far the best way to spend the evening up there.
Same sunset..........just a different view. WOW.
Waiting for SmallieSaver.............We were supposed to meet up with SmallieSaver and his crew at the Silver Falls portage. Smallie and his group would never show up. They had a canoe turn over in the wind. Their group ended up staying on the island with Janice until the next morning.
The CREW for this year............Dan, BassMan, Alan, and of course..........GeoFisher.
